Glaciers

I've been fascinated by glaciers since 8th grade Earth Science class.

Today glaciers are melting and receding due to global warming. So now I try to photograph this "endangered species" whenever I can.

Here's a photographic tour of glaciers in Norway, Peru, Alaska and Washington state...

Had the chance to visit Svartisen glacier in Norway.

Enjoying a glacier-ice beverage before hopping on the glacier.

Mild anecdotal evidence for global warming...

A hike brought us to the edge of Engebreen, an extension of Svaritsen glacier.

Geared up.

Looking up.

Moving on top of the glacier.

Side view off Svartisen.

Walking up a river of frozen ice.

Descent.

There's nothing quite like the security of being tied to strangers.

Glacier meets rock.

Svartisen is the European glacier closest to sea level.

The handiwork of Svartisen.

Another tiny group on the glacier, via zoom.

Flight home over Greenland. SAS shows you when you're flying over a glacier.

Greenland views out the window...

Peru, 2006... Me in front of Jancarurish, Alpamayo, Quitaraju, and a milky green glacial meltwater lake in Cordillera Blanca.

Jaccarurish. The unsual geography of the Andes (very high altitudes near the equator) produces chunky, cascading glaciers.

The spectacular Rio Alpamayo valley.

This pic and the next three are of glaciers on the mountain Taulliraju.

To the left of Andre is a sloping rock face once carved by a massive glacier.

Andre and I take a break with Pucajirca glaciers behind us.

Peru natives Victor and Marcelino relax with the ice-capped Millnacocha behind them.

Obviously, a long glacier flowed through this valley long ago.

Meltwater lakes at the foot of Santa Cruz mountain: the green lake Rajucocha is filtered by a terminal moraine
and flows into the blue lake Cullicocha.

The impossibly blue Cullicocha (photographed without any filters).

North Cascades, Washington, 2005..., glacier and massive glacier trail on Mt. Baker.

Closeup of glacial trough border.

Iceflow, Mt. Baker.

Alaska, 2005... Mendenhall glacier, accessible by road near Juneau.

A setting sun sprays light across Mendenhall...

Flightseeing in Juneau icefield.

Terminal corner of glacier.

Flying across...

The following several pix are from flightseeing out of Skagway and around Glacier Bay.

Bush pilot Joey was very experienced, and needed to be...

Bad weather made for some dicey flying.

Medial morraine formed by two glaciers flowing together.

Mountaintop icecap and lake.

This glacier had a waterfall tumbling off the end.

McBride Glacier.

More pix from the same trip, from the water...

Turner Glacier seen from cruise ship.

Hubbard Glacier.

The ship was no match for Hubbard glacier which was said to be 300 feet high.

Ice cave collapses into the water.

"Calved" blue ice floating near Hubbard Glacier.
